The tradition of the carnival in St. Kitts comes from the elaborate costumed balls held by Italian Catholics on the first day of Lent, the excessive hedonism was meant to be a contrast to the following self-denial as a sort of “last hurrah”. “Carne Vale” translated to “put away the meat” as consuming meat products was forbidden during the time of Lent. Carnival also has its roots in African tradition, especially the practice of parading through the village wearing costumes and large masks.
